Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21

Lord of all good,

Your Word tells us that “No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). The Greek word for “goodness” encompasses an uprightness of heart and life, a life of integrity. We confess that by our own power, none of us can ever be truly good. Yet “goodness” is listed among the fruit of the Spirit, so we know we must strive for this ideal. It is only by Your sanctifying power that we can even begin to have an upright heart and live honorable lives accordingly. The Bible tells us clearly that “the good person out of his good treasure brings forth good” (Matthew 12:35), for a “tree is known by its fruit” (Matthew 12:33). We also know that “every tree that does not bear good fruit is cast down and thrown into the fire (Matthew 3:10). Lord, may this severe warning never apply to us! Use Your Word to convict us of our sin, purge the evil from our lives, and turn our hearts that we may desire to do good. At one time we were darkness, “but now [we] are light in the Lord.” Help us to “walk as children of light, for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true, and [help us to] discern what is pleasing to [You] (Ephesians 5:8-10). Please make us worthy of Your calling, and “fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by [Your] power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in [us]… according to the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12).

Please strengthen me to exhibit integrity in the following areas…

In Your name I pray. Amen.
