Give us this day our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11
Gracious Lord,
You provide us with so much more than we need to support this body and life. You give us food and drink, house and home, clothing and shoes, possessions, money, jobs to support ourselves and our families, friends, our bodies and our faculties, and so much more. Most important, You grant us faith to believe in You, and have provided a way for our salvation. We know that You are gracious in providing us all we need, and yet far too often we complain about what we do not have, rather than thanking You for what we already have. Please forgive us for our ingratitude and for taking Your gifts for granted. Instead, grant us an attitude of humble thanksgiving for all You give to us. Move us also to be generous in giving to those who have less than we do. Give us the proper attitude toward our money and possessions, knowing that “one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). Help us not to “lay up for [our]selves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.” Rather, strengthen us to “lay up for [our]selves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19-20). Remind us that we need not worry about what we will eat or drink or what we will wear, for You know that we need these things. Help us rather to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to [us]” (Matthew 6:33).
Thank You for providing me with…
In Your name I pray. Amen.
