The Martha in Me

One Thing Needful

I see a lot of myself in Martha. I like to be industrious and keep busy around the house. And trust me, with five kids, there’s always something to be done. The chores never end. And like Martha, I tend to get impatient with those who aren’t helping. Impatience very easily gives way to resentment, and pretty soon I find myself grumbling to God, “Don’t you care that I’m the only one who ever does anything around here?” I may be “serving” others and getting the chores done, but it certainly isn’t with a happy heart.

One Thing Needful

Hello, dear friend. Let me introduce myself. My name is Martha. I have a sister named Mary and a brother named Lazarus. We are good friends of Jesus of Nazareth and His disciples. I’m sure you know us well. Yes, my brother was the one whom Jesus raised from the dead. It was amazing. Words just cannot describe that scene. Shortly after Lazarus came back to life, my sister Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume as an expression of deep gratitude. And what is recorded about me? You know the story well.
